The Big Apple - Wrentham, MA

The Big Apple Farm, located in Wrentham, MA, has been a fall staple since 1950. I have fond memories of this family friendly destination dating back to when i was kid in the 80's. Back then, the Big Apple was known for a small variety of fall staples - Apples ( amazing statement ), donuts, cider and pies. Over the last few years, they have begun to diversify their offerings and expanding the business to become your one-stop fall destination for food, hay-rides and fall decor.

Ice Cream
Flavor -9 - Value - 10

One of the newest additions to the Big Apple is the homemade ice-cream. I tried out a medium sized dish of their pumpkin flavor. This is one of the best tasting pumpkin ice-creams I've ever had. For $3.50, the Big Apple piles on the scoops. The texture was creamy and smooth, and the flavor featured just the right amount of spices.

Candy Apples
Flavor - 6 Flavor - 8

The candy apples can be hit or miss. One of my pet peeves about store bought candy apples can be their size and freshness. Some stores will give you a gigantic apple that you will never be able to fit your mouth around, and you're sure to have leftovers ( who wants leftover candy apple? ). These apples are picked on the premises and small enough so you can devour the treat without being overwhelmed by candy coating. If you show up to early in the season ( before they've been pumping out hundreds a day ), you may run across a slightly burned taste. Luckily, we picked some up during their busy season for about $2 a piece.

Donuts
Flavor - 8
The donuts are made on the premises and will not let you down. The flavor is buttery and the texture is moist. The sizes are small, but that means you'll have more room for cider and ice cream.

Apple Cider
Flavor - 8 Value - 8
Ciders can be a hit or miss. If you see a build up of spices and sediment at the bottom, the cider has probably been sitting around for awhile. I was impressed to see all the ciders in the Big Apple's refrigerators lacked the murky build up. The blend is nice and dark with a pleasurable after taste. The price was over $5 a gallon, but how often are you purchasing cider? It's not like milk or water - you'll be lucky to finish off a gallon within a week.
